WHAT IS COCOVELLE?
CocoVelle is a 100% brand new beverage, the first of its kind in Australia (and in fact the world)! When mixed with milk, it melds into an irresistibly creamy and deliciously morish coconut flavoured drink, with subtle spice and finely balanced sweetness.
Currently available in two delicious flavours (and more in development!), CocoVelle is hand-crafted from premium, all-natural ingredients including premium coconut milk, organic unrefined Muscovado Sugar and Coconut Flower Blossom Sugar and special blend of spices. It is naturally:
Free from Harmful Trans-Fats
Free from Artificial Additives
IS COCOVELLE AN AUSTRALIAN PRODUCT?
Yes, CocoVelle is owned by Silky Foods - an Australian company - and is hand-blended and packed by us right here in Melbourne!
DOES COCOVELLE REALLY CONTAIN REAL COCONUT?
Yes, and it's also made using the best tasting coconut milk we could find. CocoVelle is made using predominately real, premium coconut milk, rich in naturally-occurring coconut oils which helps to achieve that naturally creamy consistency and fragrant tropical aroma. In fact, in each 260g bag of CocoVelle Chocolat and Originale, you'll find the milk of one to two whole coconuts respectively! The coconut milk is freshely pressed and carefully air-dried to remove all of the moisture, leaving behind a concentrated, fragrant and super-fine powder that dissolves instantly in warm liquid.
IS COCOVELLE A HOT OR COLD DRINK?
CocoVelle is delicious as both a hot and cold beverage. The traditional method of preparation makes a hot drink with a smooth cap of silky foam on top, similar in style to a cappuccino, hot chocolate or chai latte. Check out our next FAQ for details on the traditional method of preparation, or click here for instructions on making a chilled CocoVelle.
HOW DO I MAKE A COLD COCOVELLE?
For a chilled CocoVelle, we recommend first adding a small amount of hot or warm milk, stirring thoroughly to dissolve completely and then topping up with cold milk, as you would when preparing a cup of cold cocoa or drinking chocolate. Adding a little warm milk first will help to completely dissolve the coconut oils and sugars in CocoVelle so that you can enjoy a perfectly balanced flavour.
HOW DO I MAKE A HOT COCOVELLE?
The classic CocoVelle can be prepared hot in 3 different ways, depending on your available equipment. The standard dose in each case is 21g (around 3 heaped teaspoons) per regular sized latte glass or cappuccino cup. Depending on your chosen method, you'll need between 160mls - 200mls of the milk of your choice, keeping in mind that steaming "stretches" the milk so you'll need less milk per cup. If you prefer a less creamy consistency, try substituting some (or all) of the milk for hot water.
Quick prep for home or work
1. Heat 1/4 of the milk in your cup
2. Add the recommended dose of CocoVelle to your cup and stir till smooth.
3. Top up with cold milk and heat in the microwave to the desired temperature.
The traditional approach
1. Gently heat milk in a saucepan till hot.
2. Add the recommended dose of CocoVelle to your cup.
3. Pour in 1/4 of the hot milk and stir until completely dissolved.
4. Top up with the remaining hot milk.
Make it like a barista
1. Steam or froth your milk using a steaming wand or milk frothing machine.
2. Follow steps 2 - 4 under the "Stovetop Method".
Note: This method will give the creamiest consistency
HOW MUCH COCOVELLE SHOULD I USE?
Just like coffee or drinking chocolate, the serving size depends on your preference for the strength of flavour and sweetness. At home we like to use 3 heaped teaspoons (roughly 21g) of CocoVelle with around 165mls of milk - and this is also what the majority of people we've asked also like!
We recommend that you start off with the suggested serving size and adjust the quantity of CocoVelle up or down until the desired flavour is achieved, taking into consideration the relative sweetness of your chosen milk type.
WHICH MILK SHOULD I USE IN COCOVELLE?
CocoVelle can be prepared with the milk of your choice. We recommend preparing CocoVelle with soy milk made with at-least 14% whole soy beans and containing 3% fat and 2% sugar for the best possible taste. Where soy milk is not possible, CocoVelle can also be prepared with any other traditional and alternative milk types. Which-ever milk you're using, here are some considerations:
Soy Milk: Soy milk is the preferred choice by the majority of tasters, even amongst those delcaring a strong dislike for soy milk, so even if soy milk might not be your usual milk, we recommend giving it a shot just to compare.
Cow's Milk: Full-cream milk is preferred where possible as it compliments CocoVelle's naturally creamy consistency. Light milks tend to be sweeter than full cream milks so you may need to adjust your CocoVelle dose to your desired taste.
Almond Milk: The consistency of almond milk tends to be watery and mild across the various brands available, so we recommend adding an additional 15% of CocoVelle to boost texture and flavour.
Coconut Milk: The strong coconut flavour of coconut milks tends to overpower the natural and subtle coconut flavour of CocoVelle, so it is not generally recommended. As they also tend to be very sweet, you may need to reduce your dose of CocoVelle if using coconut milk.
CAN I PREPARE COCOVELLE WITH WATER?
CocoVelle can be prepared with water, but keep in mind that as our recipe has been finely tuned for preparation with milk - which enhances CocoVelle's inherent nuttiness and naturally creamy consistency - so we highly recommend preparation with milk for the best possible taste and texture. Note that dilution with any amount of water will change CocoVelle's delicate flavour profile and reduce it's characteristic creaminess. As such, if preparation with water can't be avoided, you may like to consider adding more CocoVelle to compensate for the loss of texture and sweetness.
HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN COCOVELLE?
A single 21g serving of CocoVelle Originale and Chocolat contain around 96 and 86 calories respectively. The calories in CocoVelle are mostly attributed to the naturally occurring coconut oils present in the coconut milk (rather than refined sugar, which you'll find in most other powdered beverage products out in cafes and shops). This is great news for everyone, particularly for those who are calorie-counting and health-conscious individuals because coconut oil is metabolised is a unique way making it directly available for use as energy rather than being stored as fat.
Our next FAQ addresses this point in a little more detail.
HOW MUCH COCONUT OIL IS IN COCOVELLE?
The amount of coconut oil in CocoVelle depends on the flavour. Originale and Chocolat - contain between 40% - 70% real coconut milk, which is itself made up of over 50% healthy coconut oils. That means that with each serving of CocoVelle, you'll be getting at-least 6g to 10g of wholesome coconut oils beneficial for health and well-being.
DOES COCOVELLE CONTAIN SUGAR?
Yes, CocoVelle contains natural sugars, but not all sugars are created equal. Firstly, CocoVelle contains only the best quality organic, selectively sourced unrefined sugars, which contain all of their original molasses. These molasses retain all of their naturally occurring trace nutrients (between 60 to 70 of them, to be more precise - with calcium and iron being two of the most prominent) so your body will receive many benefits in exchange for sweetness. Secondly, the molasses bring with them a complex, well-rounded and balanced flavour with delicious hints of caramel. This full-bodied sweetness means that we can get away with between 35 - 50% less sugar than leading hot chocolates, chai lattes and flavoured coffees currently on the market. Finally, coconut sugar is known for being low GI (35, instead of 100 from refined sugar) to give you a slower release of energy rather than a sugar spike proceeded by a sudden drop.
Unfortunately, the majority of powdered cafe-style beverages currently sold commonly use refined white sugars (caster and icing) or raw sugar which, deceptively, is also a refined sugar, adding nothing more to your drink than empty calories. So if you need a treat, then why not have it just the way nature intended?!
IS COCOVELLE ORGANIC?
Although most of our ingredients, including our sugars and spices are indeed organic, CocoVelle is not a certified organic product. One of the reasons we are unable to make an organic claim is because our coconuts are sourced from different suppliers from around the world, and while most plantations utilise organic farming practices, some farmers have not yet received organic certification. As the worldwide demand for organic coconut products is increasing, our suppliers are working closely with farmers to receive organic certification over the coming years.
DOES COCOVELLE CONTAIN CAFFEINE?
CocoVelle Originale does not contain any coffee or caffeine so you can safely drink it after dark without the risk of a restless sleep or midnight jitters. It also means that CocoVelle makes for a delicious creamy drink for kids!
While CocoVelle Chocolat does not contain any coffee, one of it's key ingredients is cocoa, which contains a tiny percentage of naturally-occurring caffeine. For this reason we are unable to officially declare that Chocolat is caffeine-free. Even so, as the caffeine content is extremely minimal, and due to Chocolat having up to 36% less sugar than most other sugary hot chocolates, rest assured that CocoVelle Chocolat is still one of the least stimulating (yet best tasting!) hot chocolates around.
HOW "COCONUTTY" IS COCOVELLE?
CocoVelle is an all-natural product with no artificial additives, allowing the naturally occuring flavours of each ingredient to shine. That means we've avoided artificial coconut flavourings which tend to have an overpowering "synthetic" coconut aroma (think 80's sun tan lotion!) - a trait that may turn some people off coconut products.
The use of real coconut milk, which itself is characteristiclly mild and delicate, imparts a mellow coconut flavour that's smooth, balanced and 'wholesome', as often described by tasters.
WHERE CAN I FIND COCOVELLE?
CocoVelle is currently being served and stocked at over 200 locations around Australia, listed on our stockists page. Ask for CocoVelle at your local cafe, health-store or independent grocer.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF COCOVELLE?
Under correct storage conditions, CocoVelle's shelf life is 12 months. After opening, we recommend using CocoVelle within 6 weeks. Based on a 260g pack with 12 serves per bag, that gives you at-least 2 CocoVelles per week!
Using CocoVelle within this timeframe is important because, similar to coffee beans, CocoVelle contains a high proportion of volatile oils which are susceptible to oxidation on exposure to air and moisture, spoiling CocoVelle's fresh coconut aroma and taste. To keep CocoVelle tasting as fresh as possible, make sure to also store it in an air-tight container, away from heat, light and moisture, and always measure with a dry spoon.
DOES COCOVELLE CONTAIN COCONUT FLOUR?
No, there's is no coconut flour in CocoVelle... the delicious coconut flavour comes from freshly pressed, premium coconut milk.
